Location: Ojochal, Costa Rica
This is a unique one of a kind complex of 7 elevated interconnected bungalows looming above the jungle floor, anywhere from 15 to 36 feet. The concept is that of living amongst the animals and trees, looking down onto the forest floor and garden in a tranquil shaded setting ideal for watching birds and local wildlife. The interconnected pathways wind through the landscape creating a birds-eye view of the property and jungle below. Creating this second level above ground allows one to get full use of the property and in essence doubling the size of the available space by creating two dimensions to the visitor, one of being elevated in the trees and the other of walking through the jungle with little interference of the structures above. Elevated structures built in Costa Rica typically have the advantages of being eco-friendly, not affected by heavy rainfall and flooding, less effected by problems with mildew and moisture, lower cost maintenance, great for wildlife/bird watching. The entire infrastructure is in place and ready for further development.
The complex is expandable for additional units or other development with additional existing 7 platforms erected and ready to build upon. All infrastructures are already in place to expand. Property borders lush jungle surroundings with mountain views and glimpses of the ocean in some spots. Well over a hundred trees on the property including established fruit trees such as Mango, Avocado, Papaya, Banana, Guanabana, Coconut etc. Beautiful Palms abound and hundreds of low maintenance plants everywhere.
There is a total of 14 platforms constructed from solid concrete and rebar cores, interconnected by above-ground walkways which are also ‘anchored’ in the ground. A total of 6 rental units have been completed and one unit is being utilized as a Laundry and Kitchen Facility to cater for guests and future group events.
The exteriors were painted in June 2017. The interiors were newly furnished in October 2017 and include all new appliances, mattresses, bedding, retractable blinds, curtains, crockery & cutlery, tables and chairs. The property is listed on various accommodation websites, it has it’s own website also and the units are already popular rentals. Each fully equipped unit is a 37sq meter “efficiency” style, with its own kitchenette, bathroom, bedroom, and large balcony living area with an outdoor table and 2 chairs. Two units can accommodate 2 adults each on a Queen Sized Bed. Two other units accommodate 3 Adults with an additional single bed. There is ample built in cupboards and large hanging closets in all. Equipped with 12000 BTU Air-Conditioning units, as well as outdoor and indoor ceiling fans. The individual on-demand water heaters for each cabin that were installed in 2017 supplies hot water. The units have extra-large windows and sliding doors to give you a sense of being outside and mosquito mesh to keep out the unwanted bugs. The unique artistic adobe interior gives a sense of being in the jungle and creates a natural feel and look complementing the surrounding environment. There are some interesting water features in the bathroom and the decor reflects that of the forest and animals of Costa Rica.
There are two more units located closest to the parking lot. These were completely remodeled and refurnished in 2017. Designed as the owner’s or managers living quarters, one unit serves as the Master Bedroom with en-suite bathroom, walk-in closet, new cupboards and new washing machine. The other serves as the Kitchen/Dining Room and outdoor lounge. It has a newly designed kitchen and built-in cupboards. Both units have newly designed en-suite showers and toilets. It was designed such that it can easily be converted into 2 individual rental units or rented as a family unit by simply adding a bed. The other option is to use one as the manager or caretaker’s accommodation and the other as an office or staff quarters and kitchen.
The 7 empty platforms, although not built on yet could be utilized as open-air relaxation/yoga or sitting areas. One could easily turn one into a Spa, another into Yoga/Pilates platform, other into BBQ Hang-out area or whatever you can come up with. With little effort and low cost, a roof or enclosure can easily be erected on any platform.
Detailed landscaping and topography plans, which took months to develop and cost thousands of dollars, are in place with the goal to create a breathtaking environment with ideas for construction of pool area, reception area, lounge and more. There is a pond and water feature with a pump already installed on the upper part of the property situated below the bungalows and can be further developed into a relaxation area. There are plans for a pool to be built and electrical and water provision has already been made for this to be done. Pathways around the property and one leading to a trial through the bordering jungle are also planned for the future.
FUTURE DEVELOPMENT AND EXPANSIONS:
Architectural Design and Landscaping Plans have already been drawn for future expansion of the
development which includes a Reception Area, Outdoor Pool, Bar and Restaurant, Relaxation Platform, Hanging Bridge and Outdoor Areas. Calculations to complete these facilities including the landscaping was in the region of $150,000 but can easily be done in stages. The additional rental units can be built for a cost of around $20,000 each with 6 remaining platforms to be utilized for this purpose.
