Carara National Park is a birdwatcher's paradise on Costa Rica's Central Pacific Coast, nestled between dry woodland in the north and tropical rainforest in the south. It is well-known for its endangered scarlet macaw population, found in the tropical jungle and other tropical birds. Carara was established as a biological reserve before being designated a national park in 1998. Carara National Park is the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica's most northern jungle. Within the park, visitors may view both three and two-toed sloths, as well as the famed Crocodile Bridge overlooking Tarcoles River, where wild crocodiles — some as huge as 16 feet in length – can be watched in their natural habitat. In addition, the park has two hiking trails: the 2.7-mile Laguna Meandrica Trail and the 0.6-mile Araceas Nature Trail. Manuel Antonio National Park is roughly an hour and a half drive from Jaco and is an easy day excursion from anyplace in the Central Pacific area. Manuel Antonio National Park has long been regarded as Costa Rica's favorite little national park.
